Non-destructive dodging and burning

With your image open:
Hold down the alt key whilst selecting a new layer.
This creates a new layer and opens a dialogue box.
Select Overlay and tick, "Fill with 50% grey".
Using white as the foreground colour and a small soft brush with an opacity of 10, paint on the areas you wish to lighten.
Change the foregound colour to black and do the same to darken areas.
